“To fund the advancement of justice by improving access, education and accountability.”
In 1928, Judge Sturgess described access to legal services like this – “Justice is open to everyone in the same way as the Ritz Hotel.” This statement is so true – while everyone is permitted into the halls of justice, not everyone can afford a lawyer who can guide them through their legal needs. Enter the South Carolina Bar Foundation – and the grantees that the Foundation supports – who work, among other things, to increase access to legal services.
Today, the Bar Foundation is the only statewide funding source for the provision of civil legal aid and law related projects, having allocated approximately $49.7 million to its grantees. Victims of domestic violence, homeless families, persons denied access to necessary health care services, victims of discrimination, children in need of special education, families, students, targets of consumer fraud and the elderly are those served.
