2022 ANNUAL REPORT

A Note from the President and Director

February 28, 2023

Dear Friend of the South Carolina Bar Foundation:

The South Carolina Bar Foundation Board and Staff are pleased to share with you our Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2022. We are honored to fund organizations around the state that improve the lives of the poor, the homeless, and those with nowhere else to turn by meeting their legal needs and beyond. The annual report details the South Carolina Bar Foundation’s funding and illustrates how our resources are distributed.

We are fortunate to have dedicated donors and consistent IOLTA income, but the needs of human trafficking victims, the homeless, veterans, domestic violence victims, and children far outweigh what we can provide.

We hope to reach 2,023 donors by December 31, 2023. We are already at 109. Please consider donating to assist your neighbors in need. You can donate online at https://scbf.networkforgood.com/.

We appreciate your generosity and continued support of the South Carolina Bar Foundation!

“The SC Victim Assistance Network Legal Team is a small group that does big work across our state. The need for our services increases each year. The funds we receive from the SC Bar Foundation allow us the ability to meet the challenges of our ever-growing client base in this ever-changing landscape. We leverage our funds to maximize our resources and staff. From orders of protection to immigration filings, our successes in court and beyond depend upon the funds we receive from the SC Bar Foundation. We are so grateful for the continuing support.”

“We have been extremely grateful for the SC Bar Foundation grant. It has allowed us to assist individuals pay for the court costs or administrative fees that had the potential to entangle them in the criminal legal system indefinitely. Costs that seem straightforward or simple, for example the $100 reinstatement fee for the Department of Motor Vehicles, are less straightforward when they are buried under complex and powerful systems. Getting one's license back is more than just getting on the road - it allows someone to expand the geographic scope of their job and housing opportunities. Being given the choice between pretrial intervention and a time-served plea is not really a choice if you cannot afford the program fees. The SC Bar Foundation grant has allowed us to remove finances from decisions like this; it has allowed us to chip away at the hurdle of economic inequity that stands between a person and their opportunities.”
